Should I Become An Entrepreneur After Graduation?

I was digging through some of the archives on my feed reader when I came across an article called Are These Career Myths Holding you Back! The list, published by BullsEyeResumes, looks to break down some of the job hunting myths that always seem to hang around.

However, one stuck out to me and I think it deserves a little more analysis:

“I really should be looking for a “safe” industry where there is a lot of job security. This is just not the time to start a business.”

No doubt about it, 2009 was a seriously tough year, especially for those looking for Entry Level Jobs. However, depending on the type of business you want to start, becoming an entrepreneur may not be a bad idea.

Given the relative lack of Entry Level Jobs which exist today, starting your own business may be a great idea. And the best part is, as a new grad, you are already used to living near the poverty line. Being a first time entrepreneur, you won’t have the disadvantage of becoming used to a regular paycheck.

But don’t get me wrong. Starting a business takes a lot of work and very long hours. It’s not for everyone, but with great risk, comes great reward.

If I were to do it all again, I would have tried to start my own business straight out of school. As a new grad, this is something you may want to consider.
