Remember the 3 P’s

Let’s face it, it’s a tough market out there ( I can attest from firsthand experience) and things are not guaranteed to go according to plan. Jobs and internships are hard to come by. Often we find ourselves submitting resumes and applications into the abyss, uncertain if they will do much good. We sit and wait to hear back but never know if the phone will ring or if an email will come. It is easy to be discouraged, but let us remember the 3 P’s.

Positivity. Sure, when things aren’t going our way, it is easy to be down. We submitted an app for a job or internship we really wanted, but we never hear back. Interviews don’t go as well as planned. There are few things we can control in this job market, but there is one thing we can control: how we react. We alone have the power to control our attitude and having a positive attitude is invaluable. By no means am I saying this is an easy task, but we must try! I am graduating in about a month and still waiting for my job plans to fall into place, but I am optimistic that things will fall into place. Regardless of what happens, stay positive….a positive attitude breeds positive results!

Persistence. Apply for a job or two, don’t get selected, and it’s easy to throw in the towel and give up….but DON’T! Take it as a learning experience, as motivation, as an opportunity to find something even better for you! If getting a job was as easy as sending one application…everyone would have a job. Sometimes that “yes” might not come til job application 4, 5 or even 10. The key is to stick with it and continue to be proactive! Like I said, there are not many things you can control but your effort is one of them. Be unwavering in your efforts and keep at it!

Patience. Probably the toughest of the 3 P’s, but the biggest one. Sometimes things may not come tomorrow, though we would like them. I applied for 2 positions back in January and finally heard back this past week…it’s APRIL! I had completely forgot because it had been so long and I heard nothing…but what do you know, I’m heading in for an interview next week! Know that anything can happen, at any time…only takes one call, one email, whatever it may be. Being patient is not easy, but we must keep in mind that not all things happen overnight.

It’s a tough world out there…but always remember the 3 P’s: Positivity, Persistence, and Patience!
