As phone interviews become more important to the Entry Level recruiting strategy at many firms, it’s vital to learn as much as you can about these types of interviews. Without a standout phone interview, you will never find yourself face-to-face with the recruiter, which is where you really get a chance to make a good impression.

Secrets of the Job Hunt has a new post on these types of interviews. Among the advice is one of my favorite tips, which is to always smile during an interview. This is particularly true for phone interviews and is one of many great pieces of advice in the post.

However, I don’t necessarily agree with one of the major points: standing up and walking around. They said:

Stand up and walk around as you talk – funny how this works but you tend to sound more authoritative and strong when you are doing something vs. sitting at a desk or on a couch playing with a button on a seat cushion.

I prefer to have those being interviewed sit and attempt to maintain the same posture that they would if they were actually sitting face-to-face with the interviewer. Standing and walking around may cause to you sound “authoritative and strong”, but it can also cause to you come across as hyper and anxious. I would rather see you stay in your seat.

Either way, this is a great read on the topic of phone interviews. Check it out here.
