Every now and then I come across an article with job hunting advice in a place where I wouldn’t expect to find it. This held true when Should I flirt on my job interview? showed up on the MSN Canada web portal.

Perhaps the tag line says it best:

Jean Godfrey-June, beauty editor of Lucky magazine, gives us her perspective on nailing a job interview, one beauty tip at a time.

Good grief.

Among the many pearls of wisdom are:

…focus your attention instead on whatever you think is the most attractive feature of the person across the table and really think hard about how lovely he or she is.

and

Nothing says “grifter” like dark, sticky lip gloss and a pair of false eyelashes.

Needless to say, I’m not impressed. Maybe I should have stopped at the introduction:

I know, it’s all about the work, not your looks. But I — a very dark horse for various jobs throughout my career — have my tips anyway. Read on …

If I have only one piece of advice I can give you to help correct this mess, it is focus on the task at hand. Do your best to look presentable and professional, don’t wear something that would give the wrong impression, and NEVER flirt during a job interview.

And remember, if you are looking for a job online, keep an eye on whose advice you take. There is a lot of misinformation out there.
