Maintaining your network

In past posts I have discussed not only the importance of networking, but how to effectively network. However, even though your network is constantly evolving, you need to ensure that you take care of it. If you lose contact with people in your network, they will be less likely to help out when needed.

Maintaining your network is easy. It can be as simple as sending a short email or meeting up for a beer at a local bar. In my experience, mentors are more than willing to chat whenever you need advice or a little coaching. However, if you only ever contact them when you need something, they are going to feel like they are being used.

So don’t be afraid to make contact, even if it is just to shoot the breeze or let them know about a recent bit of good news. They will appreciate hearing it and will feel better about helping you in the future.

Remember. Networks can grow, but they can also shrink. Take care of them. They are invaluable to your future career.
