Hard Copy vs Soft Copy Cover Letters

Interesting post at Secrets of the Job Hunt that brought a NY Times article on Cover Letter Secrets to my attention. Somehow I had missed this article. I really like the part about sending a hard copy, especially with the signed note.

Call me old school, but I still believe that a hard-copy cover letter is one of the best ways to stand out from the crowd. This is especially true in the era of job boards and electronic applications. Maybe I’m a relic from days gone by, but if your cover letter is the only one on the recruiters desk, how can this be a bad thing?

It’s a short post, but well worth the read.

Enjoy!

Although this has good intentions, I find that these days there is no mailing address to send it to on the job posting. But I suppose a fax might do?

You’re right, it can be difficult. However, you can often dig up a mailing address if you do enough research. Even if I can’t find an address, I will try calling the main phone line (assuming I can find it) and ask for the address.

If a fax is an option, I would take it. Getting a hard copy on someone’s desk makes it easier to ignore than a soft copy in an email.

    Thanks for your comment!!

  3. Ha, I actually just wrote about this topic yesterday — but argued the opposite point of view:
