Even John Tesh Has Career Advice!

I was driving home to visit my family last week when I got a call from my friend Jared. He was listening to the John Tesh Radio Show (for reasons beyond me) and said that I had to listen to John’s career advice because it might be a good fit for Gradversity.com.

So there I was, driving down the highway, listening to John Tesh preach career advice on his radio show through my cell phone.

So what did he have to say? While I couldn’t copy down any of his pearls of wisdom at the time, Mr. Tesh was nice enough to post his segments on his website. If you look hard enough, you can find tips like:

When you’re applying for a job, don’t just update your old résumé. If the résumé is several years old, the content is probably outdated. So review your résumé, and get rid of any information that isn’t applicable to your current career goals. For example, if you’re looking for a job in accounting, employers probably don’t need to see that you delivered pizzas for two years in college.

and…

Use your cover letter. A lot of people have extended gaps in their work history due to the tough economic times. So use your cover letter to address any concerns an employer may have about these gaps. You can explain how you’ve kept your skills up-to-date since your last full-time position. For example, you can talk about how you took classes to brush up on your computer skills. You can also mention if you did any volunteer work and how the skills you learned while volunteering make you a good fit for the job you’re applying for. According to one survey, over 80% of employers view volunteering as relevant work experience.

Overall, it’s pretty generic advice. It may not be that helpful, but every little bit counts.
