I just wanted to take a second to congratulate my good friends Jared and Jordan on welcoming Cashton James Cole into the world yesterday at 9 lb, 3 oz. I got a chance to visit him today as the hospital and he is the cutest kid I have ever seen. He also happens to be my Godson!

Congratulations to both of you! Hopefully we will see a Cashton Facebook page coming soon!

Sigh…

My main goal with this site is to share job-search resources with anyone who visits. That being said, I’m going to take a minute to rant about one of my biggest pet peeves.

Two or three times a week I hear from someone who wants me to feature their site or service on Gradversity. I don’t mind being pitched. Actually, I enjoy it. And while I can’t promise that I will feature everything that comes my way, I do my best to review what I’m sent.

The problem is, many of the pitches I see fail miserably.

Why? There are two reasons:

The pitch doesn’t immediately grab my attention and let me know how it will benefit job seekers

The site or service is flawed.

Today I visited a site that was originally pitched to me a few months ago. They were even nice enough to include demo login credentials so I didn’t have to waste my time signing up. Things we looking good until…

I logged in.

Not only did I have a difficult time navigating around the site, but I actually got errors. Apparently the site does not play nice with Firefox.

Needless to say, the site (which will remain nameless) will not be profiled on Gradversity.

So please, for the sake of my sanity (and your future success), make sure that your pitch is bulletproof before you send it out.

This has been a public service announcement from Gradversity. Thanks for listening.

Just wanted to let you know that this is a busy week here at Gradversity. On top of trying to share great job-search related content, I’m also working on some other cool stuff for the site (like the long-promised contest that I’ve been on the verge of for the last few months). I promise it will be worth it!

Anyway, since life is a little crazy this week, I might not be able to respond right away if you drop me an email or a comment. However, I will get back to you soon. Promise!

Have a great week!

Normally, I’m a pretty mellow guy and I don’t let my emotions get out of control. However, when I got in my car this morning, I found that someone had smashed my windshield with a blunt object.

Unfortunately, I lost it.

Now that a few hours have passed and I’ve had a chance to cool down, I started thinking about the ramifications of my broken glass on this hooligan’s job search.

Now, I’m making a number of assumptions here for the benefit of this post:

He/She will eventually want a job

He/She is going to get caught

The biggest problem I see is that with a conviction of any kind on your record, you will have a difficult passing any type of background check. This means that no matter what skills you have, you are going to have one big red “X” on your scorecard before an employer even thinks of offering you a job.

There is also the little issue of references. I can only guess that the type of person who would do this would have poor references to begin with. However, if they keep committing random acts of vandalism, their references are sure to dry up. No positive references often means no job.

Ultimately, I think this person has made a huge mistake (or most likely another huge mistake). While I don’t want to dwell on the negatives, I hope that they can overcome whatever childish impulses caused this particular act and (hopefully) look forward to a long career as Mike Tyson’s sparring partner.

There, I feel much better.

PS. On the off chance that the neanderthal who did this to my car happens to be reading post, I would invite you to click here.

Over the last few months, T.A.P. (The Twitter Advice Project run by CAREEREALISM) has been dispensing career advice from various experts to job seekers on Twitter.

This week, the program hit two major milestones. First, it reached the 100 question mark (meaning 100 questions successfully answered by the career experts). Second, it reached 5000 Twitter followers!

Best of all, it took only 2 months to reach both of these goals, surpassing the expectations of all involved.

So if you are a job hunter and you are looking for quality career advice, feel free to submit your question to twitter@careerealism.com and have it answered by a group of helpful experts.

And if you aren’t on Twitter, what are you waiting for?

Congratulations to T.A.P. for marking its first (of many) major milestones!
